Volunteer Trainings

Volunteer Orientation & Horsemanship

  • REQUIRED before you sign up for any shifts or other trainings

  • During our Orientation we welcome you to Gifted Herd, make sure all volunteer paperwork is completed, give you a tour of the barn, and introduce you to our herd. The mucking and feeding trainings are included in the Orientation to give you the opportunity to start volunteering as soon as you’d like.

  • The purpose of our Horsemanship Clinic is to make sure that all volunteers are on the same page about horse care, barn protocols, and equine handling. During the clinic we go over how to catch and halter, lead the horses, safety, basic grooming, how to conduct a quick equine health check, etc.

In-session & Side-Walker Training

  • Our In-Session training gives volunteers tools to handle any situation that may arise with participants, while keeping minimal physical contact but maximum connection.

  • The Side-Walker training teaches you different ways to help keep participants balanced when in the saddle.

Horse Leader Training

  • To become a Horse Leader in our sessions, please complete three sessions as a Side Walker and In-Session Team member before signing up for a Horse Leader Training. Once completed, please check the calendar/appointments to find a training date that works for you.

  • The Horse Leader training teaches you how to handle any equine behavior while in a session setting

All volunteers must be at least 16 years of age, able to walk for at least an hour in all weather conditions, and/or drag heavy loads such as a full muck tub.
